Forgive me for footnoting a personal milestone, but this review has the distinction of being the 300th comic I’ve reviewed at Poopsheet Foundation!

For Monkey Squad Ones fans, this is the most accomplished issue yet. Michel continues to improve his craft on all fronts. If you look at the first issues of the series and compare them to this effort, there is a dramatic difference in the level of engagement associated with his imaginative writing, as well as his technical artistic ability. It’s evident in the peppier dialogue and the more generous backgrounds. I particularly enjoy the visual depth of the panels, they’re crammed with information without feeling cramped or claustrophobic. This issue has lots to offer as the guys are still in STL fighting the zombie horde. There’s a musical prelude that opens the issue, and then, wait for it… “The Underarch.” It’s a brilliant touch, one that’s so logical, staring you right in the face, that I’m surprised no writer that I’m aware of has ever taken advantage of that idea before. Michel offers huge two page action scenes, big mech robots, subdued humor, with a tongue-in-cheek attack on the genre. If the success of Robert Kirkman’s Image Comic-turned-AMC-hit-series “The Walking Dead” is about humanity breaking down after the apocalypse, then Monkey Squad One might just be about how it’s already pretty screwed up to begin with. There’s a huge cliffhanger here that has me on the edge of my seat waiting for the next installment. Grade A.
